A Poem Celebrating the Charlotte & William Bloomberg Medford Public Library's First Chapter
In October, we invited Terry E. Carter to share a poem that celebrates the library's first chapter, and speaks to the promise of the library for our community. Terry performed A Library Card to an audience of library supporters in Bonsignore Hall.
Medford native Terry E. Carter is a writer. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Fisk University with a bachelor’s degree in English. He also completed a graduate fellowship in Mass Communications at Boston University. He is a seasoned corporate trainer and has worked for many years in the sales, HR, and career development field. He currently directs Elder Services for the West Medford Community Center.
Terry is a husband, a father, a pastor a visual artist and a jazz aficionado. He has published six volumes of poetry, Brown Skin and the Bread of Life: A Poet’s Journey (2010-AmericaStar), Brown Skin and the Beautiful Faith: A Poet’s Reflection (2014-Xulon Press), Brown Skin and the Brand New Day: A Poet's Renaissance (2016-Xulon), and Brown Skin and the Burden of Proof: A Poet's Revelation (2018-Xulon), Brown Skin and the Brave New World: A Poet's Anthem (2020-Xulon) and his latest book, Brown Skin and the Brilliant Sun: A Poet's Opus (2022-Xulon). He has also recorded a jazz/poetry CD called The Ally Project and is currently hard at work on Brown Skin volume 7, to be released in early 2025.
Terry was named the inaugural "Poet Laureate" of the City of Medford, MA in 2021. His two-year term ended in June 2023. Terry belongs to the National Black Poet Laureates Society and his work is included in their 2023-24 anthology In Fullness of the Word.
